Local SEO Guide for Vancouver and California Businesses
How to win “near me” searches: Google Business Profile, local pages, reviews and citations — with examples for both markets.

Local search is where many service businesses win or lose. Whether you run a flooring company in Burnaby or a design studio in Torrance, the fundamentals are the same, but the competition and the details differ between markets. This guide covers how local results are chosen, the steps that move the needle, and what to consider when you operate in Greater Vancouver, California or both.
How local results are chosen
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the area they name) and prominence (how well known and trusted you appear, based on things like reviews, links and mentions). You cannot change distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence, and you can make sure your details are complete and accurate.
Step 1: Build a complete Google Business Profile
- Choose the most specific primary category, plus relevant secondary ones.
- Use your real business name, with no added keywords.
- Enter accurate hours, phone, website and service area.
- List your services with short descriptions and upload real photos regularly.
- Reply to every review.
Step 2: Make your website locally relevant
Create a page for each service and, where you genuinely serve them, each area. Each page should contain original, useful content: which neighbourhoods you cover, local examples, typical timelines and how to reach you. Avoid duplicated pages that only swap the city name; search engines see through them and visitors get no value. Our service-area pages show how we structure local content for Greater Vancouver and California.
Step 3: Keep your details consistent
Your business name, address and phone number should match across your website, your profile and the main directories. Small differences such as “Suite” versus “#”, or an old phone number on one listing, create confusion. Audit your listings once, fix them, then check quarterly.
Step 4: Earn reviews the right way
Ask happy customers for reviews soon after the job, send a direct link, and reply to everything, including criticism. Never buy, fake or trade reviews; it breaks the platforms’ rules and damages trust. Reviews that mention the specific service and area help relevance as well as prominence.
Step 5: Build local authority
- Join your chamber of commerce or trade association.
- Sponsor a local team or event and ask for a listing.
- Ask suppliers and partners to link to you.
- Contribute expert comments to local news and blogs.
Vancouver and California: what differs
- Density: Both are competitive, so target specific neighbourhoods and services, not just the city name.
- Language: Many communities search in more than one language; consider bilingual pages where it fits.
- Spelling and terms: use Canadian or American spelling and vocabulary to match your audience.
- Formats: phone numbers, addresses, currency and postal or ZIP codes should follow each country’s norms.
- Legal details: privacy and advertising rules differ; check the requirements for each market.
- Cross-border businesses: present each office clearly with its own address and phone, and its own local pages, rather than blending them.
Service-area businesses
If you travel to customers and do not serve people at your premises, you can hide your address on your profile and list the areas you serve instead. Be realistic about the area; listing every city in a huge region does not make you rank in all of them.
Track what matters
Track calls, direction requests and website clicks from your profile, and use call tracking so you know which enquiries came from search. Use UTM tags on your profile’s website link so analytics can separate profile traffic from other sources; our free UTM builder makes this simple.
Common mistakes
- Keyword-stuffed business names, which can lead to suspension.
- Inconsistent details across listings.
- Ignoring reviews or replying defensively.
- Publishing near-identical pages for dozens of cities.
- Setting up a profile and never touching it again.
